KINGDOMS is an interactive documentary feature on the life of Francelino de Xapanã, a High priest who brought voodoo worship and a religion called Tambor-de-Mina from the northeastern Brazilian state of Maranhão to São Paulo in 1977. A wide range of people from Francelino’s past, including anthropologists, politicians, lawyers and religious leaders, talk about a religion in which enchanted entities from Turkey, France, Portugal, the Amazon forest and the African kingdom of Dahomey co-exist and interact with one another. They also recall three key moments in Francelino’s life, in which he took such neopentecostal churches as the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God to court, in a life-long battle against religious persecution that culminated in his death, in 2007.
